NetApp ONTAP SVM create (NFS, CIFS, iSCSI protocol)

Storage Virtual Machines (SVMs, formerly known as Vservers) contain data volumes and one or more LIFs through which they serve data to the clients. SVMs securely isolate the shared virtualized data storage and network, and each SVM appears as a single dedicated server to the clients.

Steps to create SVM create (NFS, CIFS, iSCSI protocol)

Click Storage ->SVMs

Click-> create

Give SVM Name

Security Style -> Select Windows or Linux

Select Root Aggregate

Enter Search Domains

Enter Name Server

Press Submit and continue

Assign password for vsadmin

Check mark on Create a new LIF for SVM management

Assign IP Address -> Drop down and select Without a Subnet

Next page will popup

Enter IP address

Netmask

Gateway

Click Browse

Select port and press OK

Press Submit & Continue

NetApp ONTAP CIFS Share

What is CIFS Protocol-: Common Internet File System (CIFS) is a network filesystem protocol used to provide shared access to files and printers between machines on the network. A CIFS client application can read, write, edit and even remove files on the remote server.

CIFS client can communicate with any server that is set up to receive a CIFS client request.

NetApp ONTAP CIFS protocol Enable

Before enabling CIFS, NFS or other protocol on NetApp ONTAP you need to enter license

You need to create SVM first

Click on Storage -> SVM

Select pre created SVM -> SVM Setting

Select CIFS to enable

Select CIFS -> Save and close

Click on setup

Note-> Before setup any protocol on SVM LIF should configure In case it is not configured you shall receive below error.

The Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) does not have any data LIF configured for CIFS protocol. Create data LIFs before configuring the CIFS server.]

To configure LIF please follow below How to create LIF

Enter NetBios Name

Enter Domain Name

Enter User Name of AD join account

Enter password

Click Setup

Now use LIF IP to access network folder (I had configured 192.168.1.74 in LIF)

NetApp ONTAP 9.6 add License

To Add NetApp ONTAP License

Enter user ID and password

Click Configuration -> Cluster -> License

Click ADD

Enter license details and Add.

Create Qtree in NetApp ONTAP

Qtree ->A qtree is a logically defined file system that can exist as a special subdirectory of the root directory within a FlexVol volume. You can create up to 4995 qtrees per volume. There is no maximum limit for the storage system as a whole. You can create qtrees for managing and partitioning your data within the volume.

To create Qtree in NetApp you need to create Aggregate, SVM and Volume. you can use below link.

Click Qtree under Storage

Select SVM where you want to create Qtree and Click Create

Enter Qtree Name

Volume -> Brows and select volume from SVM

Select Security Style NTFS/UNIX

Click Quota assign space usage limit

Check mark on Activate the Quota -> Activate

Create Volume in NetApp

NetApp Volume -: Volumes are data containers that enable you to partition and manage your data. ... Data ONTAP efficiency capabilities, compression and deduplication, are supported for both types of volumes. Volumes contain file systems in a NAS environment, and LUNs in a SAN environment. Volumes are associated with one Vserver.

Before creating volume you need to create Aggregate and SVMs.

Click Volume under storage -> Create

You will see two types for Volume creation.

Create FlexVol

Select SVM and continue

Enter Volume Name

Select Aggregate

Assign Total size

And click create

How to create Aggregate in NetApp ONTAP

An aggregate is a collection of disks, that can be arranged into one or more RAID groups. It is required to allow for the provisioning of space for connected hosts.

Click Storage and expend-> Click Aggregate and Disks and Expend -> Click Aggregate

Click Create

Enable Manually create Aggregate

Enter Aggregate Name

Select Disk Type

Number of Disks

RAID configure

and Submit to create Aggregate
